Under the supervision of the Superintendent, the Mechanic is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee performs semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the Sherman County Road and Bridge Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Plans and evaluates maintenance for all County vehicles (ambulance, fire trucks, Road and Bridge equipment, landfill equipment) and mechanical equipment, using outside vendors when required.
- Plans, evaluates and maintains care of light vehicles used by departments.
- Orders and stocks all parts, filters, fluids, and tools required for repairs and maintenance.
- Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work.
- Provides building maintenance for County facilities, including electrical, HVAC maintenance, and concrete work.
- Assists on road crew as needed for maintenance.
- Operates a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
- Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
- Maintains brakes, engines, electrical, hydraulic, transmission, fuel, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related system.
- Changes and repairs tires and tubes.
- Assists with the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles, mechanical equipment and related supplies.
- Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
- Maintains records and prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment.
- Assists with noxious weed control as needed.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
- Maintains the County shop and yard.
- Performs duties of Equipment Operator, including snow removal if needed.
- Provides back-up support for the Office Secretary.
- Responds to emergency call-outs.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
Requirements
• Valid Kansas Driver’s License.
• Commercial Driver’s License Class A or Class B.
• MSHA License.
• Ability to pass drug screening.
• First Aid and CPR certification, preferred
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, proportions and slopes, addition or subtraction, and volume.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to interact and respond to questions from vendors, suppliers, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form, and ability to interpret basic blueprints and plans.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general reference documents, safety manuals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited information exists.
- Ability to track hours by project, and accurately record and track repairs and maintenance to equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and culverts. Knowledge of asphalt laying and patching.
- Knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in Road and Bridge construction and maintenance work, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, and principles and practices of engineering.
- Skill in first aid, communication, and supervisory skills.
- Skill in operating a variety of heavy and light equipment, and hand and power tools.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes, or airborne particles. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. This position may be called out 24 hours a day or rotate being on call, including weekends and holidays.
