Under the supervision of the Superintendent, the Equipment Operator I is a non-exempt position under FLSA. Responsible for the upkeep and enforcement of regulations at the facility. Operates equipment and trucks used at the Landfill. Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of equipment and the shop.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assists users of the Landfill, directing where to properly dispose of solid waste.
- Operates light equipment for operations.
- Assists with equipment maintenance.
- Maintains different dump sites (tree, metal, compost, construction and demolition, asbestos, concrete).
- Assists haulers with sorting and separating trash.
- Sorts and separates waste into appropriate disposal areas.
- Maintains records required by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Sherman County.
- Monitors wind speeds to determine use and disposal at the Landfill.
- Checks and maintains the Landfill’s closed areas.
- Reports hazards that cannot be corrected under ordinary maintenance.
- Assures equipment has the necessary fuel, lubricants, and supplies to perform the job.
- Oversees the inspection of loads that are delivered to the local site for appropriateness of materials.
- Removes any unauthorized materials that have been inappropriately placed.
- Maintains Landfill in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Operate mowers and other small equipment and tools to maintain weed control.
- Provides maintenance, cleaning and sanitizing the building.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
- Performs maintenance of building and yard.
- Provides back-up customer support.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Requirements
Minimum Education or Experience Required
High school education or G.E.D. and six to twelve months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education or Experience Required
High school diploma or G.E.D. and twelve months to two years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other Requirements – Certificates/Licensures
- Valid Kansas Driver’s License.
- Ability to pass drug screening.
- First Aid and CPR certification, preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes, or airborne particles. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. This position may work weekends.
